B1 Intermediate Lesson 13 Box A4 - Two persons and two actions in one sentence.

hello students this is teacher Kenn

in this episode of Intermediate English

for work and travel

we will practice the correct structure to

use when we have two persons

performing two actions in the same sentence

Lesson 13 Box A4 and Exercise 9

pages 134 through 136 on our book

English sentence structure

pages 147 through 149 on our PDF

let's move on to the structure

and go over some practice

in previous lessons we Learned to put "to"

as a connector between two actions

performed by the same person

like the example George wants to go

but what happens when I have one person,

George, that wants another person,

John, to perform the second action of going?

people who speak Spanish as a first language

might feel the urge to say

"George wants that John goes"

but that is a clear indication

that you're still thinking in Spanish

before speaking in English

the correct way to say this would be

George wants John to go

the structure is person - action -

person-to-action

the secondary person goes after the first action

before "to" and the second action

again the examples in Box A4 are

George wants to go VS George wants John to go

please don't say George wants that John goes ever again

let's read the additional examples

at the end of page 134

pay attention to the structure

it's repetitive no matter the circumstance

person action person to action

repeat after me

George would like John to go

George expects John to go

the teacher wants the students to learn English

he would like them to practice everyday

he expects them to learn quickly

very good

now let's skip exercise 8 and focus on the note

before exercise 9

there are some additional verbs

which can use this structure

and some examples

let's read them left to right

top to bottom

repeat after me

tell

permit

advise

help

order

force

urge

get

invite

persuade

Mr Miller told John to bring sandwiches

the weatherman advised us to wear gloves

the nurse persuaded the child to eat

Mrs Johnson permits the students to use her kitchen

the bad weather forced them to return early

my new glasses help me to read the signs

very good

okay let's go to exercise 9

I will make a question

and give you clues for the answer

practice providing the response out loud

using the structure we just went over

after giving you a moment to respond

I'll say the answer myself

so you can compare your answer to mine

make sure you repeat my answer out loud

to internalize any corrections necessary

from the examples
